Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics of superficial lymphadenopathy in Korean children.
Biopsies specimens of 164 children patients were obtained from superficial lymph nodes and evaluated histopathologically and clinically at the CNU-Hospital from Jan. 1979 to Dec. 1984.
The results were obtained as follows:
1. Male to female ratio was 1. 9: 1, and the most frequent age was preschool age group (1-6years), next adolescence group (10-15 years).
2. Causes for the superficial lymphadenopathy were only clarified in 58 cases (35.4%) of 164 ones.
3. Occurrence of superficial lymphadenopathy was chronic non-specific reactive lymphadenitis, 102 cases (62.3%), tuberculous lymphadenitis, 35(21.4%) primary and metastatic malignant tumors, 20(12.2%), acute reactive lymphadenitis, 4(2.4%), fungal lymphadenitis, 20.2%), acute supportive lymphadenitis, 1(0.6%), respectively.
4. Malignant tumors of superficial lymphadenopathy were classified as malignant lymphoma, 14 cases, Hodgkin¢¥s disease, 3, and leukemia involvement and neuroblastoma metastasis, 3 cases.
5. There was no relationship between histopathological types of superficial lymphadenopathy and age, sex distribution.
6. Duration of superficial lymphadenopathy was 1-3 months in many cases, especially of malignant tumors. Some cases, however, showed duration of more than 6 years.
7. Multiple involvement of superficial lymph node was shown in a frequency of 3.3 times more than single involvement, especially in cases of malignant tumors.
8. The involved sites of the superficial lymphadenopathy were mostly cervical area and next, axially and inguinal region in order.
